My musical journey began around 2015, when legendary hip-hop producer DJ Premier and Detroit MC Royce da 5'9" released their classic collaborative album, PRhyme. The second track of the album, "Dat Sound Good" (feat. Ab-Soul, Mac Miller), felt like a return to the nostalgia of listening ‘90s hip-hop growing up in Chicago. Mac’s casual flow on the track, opening with the lines, "Yeah, a bunch of poison in my bloodstream/ Now it's getting ugly, I must be another junkie," shook my core. In 2015, I was struggling personally, and my spirit was calling for healthier outlets than the ones I was pursuing at the time. I thought that if I could be brutally honest like Mac was on that song and try something radically different, like attempting hip-hop music that gave me joy as a kid, maybe I could grow and get to a better place. A seed was planted, and my first raps were written. My early style mirrored Eminem, and I went by the name "subjekt matter." Why? Well, I wasn’t quite sure yet what a white kid from the Northwest side of Chicago was going to rap about? LOL. But I was determined to grow and this was just the beginning. So thank you Preemo, Royce, and Mac for the inspiration. It’s been a ride.
Peace!
Danny
