Onion Headz,
Seven years ago today, I released my first song as Danny Onionz.
In 2016, while at a music festival, I realized the need to evolve myself and my music.

I was looking down into a pit of people dancing 🕺, vibing 🎶, and it was beautiful—but it was strange because amidst this, I felt a duality inside of me. A feeling of both love ❤️ and the illusion of fear. I didn’t know what it was exactly, but I decided to write those feelings in my notes app, and they became the foundation for my first song, ‘ET.’
Transitioning from “subjekt matter” to "Danny Onionz", I embraced a new identity—a name gifted by a dear friend, Stubhy of Lucky Boys Confusion. It symbolized an evolution of my art inspired by heritage, Chicago roots, and unity:
1. Heritage: My last name means “onion” 🧅 in Romantic languages.
2. Roots: Native Algonquin tribe’s name for Chicago, “shikaakwa,” means “onion.” 🌆
3. Unity: “Onion” stems from the Latin unio, meaning “one” or “unity.” ✨
On January 6, 2018, ‘ET’ was born. It marked my shift to a more authentic voice. Over 18 months of refining the song, my cousin Ben and I drew inspiration from Alabama Shakes’ “Sound and Color,” nailing the “beautiful and strange” sound we sought. The response was humbling, with features on Vocalo Radio and DJ Booth fueling my passion to go deeper into my craft.
